Hello everybody,
I am Sarah, 23 years old, and I divide my time between London, Rome and Singapore for study and heritage reasons. I'm also Italian Language Coordinator for TakingITGlobal, which basically means I oversee the English/Italian translation of this website.
I've been wanting to upload an entry to this blog for some time now, but never found an appropriate topic to write about. I always felt I needed to learn more about issues before venturing out with my own opinion, and a law degree doesn't leave you much time for anything else really, whether it's blogging or further research.
Equally for some time now, I have been interested in women's rights. In high school, few issues would get me more riled up, and at university I always chose to study topics related to feminism if we were given options to select - feminism related to law and social theory, feminism related to law, feminism and criminology, antidiscrimination... the list goes on. For all the discourse on human rights and equality, discrimination persists to this day, in the overwhelming majority of geographical and notional areas.
To be honest, few characters inspire me, personally, more than headstrong and successful women. And since TIG is principally about inspiring others to act, why not unite my interest for women's studies with my TIG involvement, and seek to inspire others in my turn? I will try to update my TIGBlog with biographies of famous women, historical or of today, which I believe can be points of reference for today's youth, male or female. Because at the end of the day, feminism in practice is about swimming upstream - and a pinch of iconoclasm can be useful to all of us at some point in our lives.
So I hereby inaugurate my TIGBlog. Hopefully I will be able to pass on to you some of the strength and encouragement I have been able to gather from these women.
Cheers,
Sarah
